High Water Markers of Christopher’s Observee, by Christopher Badgenoone
Christopher Badgenoone observed the life of a woman named Charlene. She was the last one of thirteen children. Earlier siblings came of age during the Great War. She was born in Brussels, Belgium at the same time her future husband Jimmy entered his third year in high school. In the US exuberance erased the reminders of global conflict. Europeans had a different spin on the period.
She caught up with Jimmy after the second global conflict. He called her his Cheri. She ignored the uniform and focused on the laughter that he brought to her world. As her story unfolds she becomes a war bride, a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She escapes the anonymity of a nursing home. Cheri is a vibrant remnant of the Greatest Generation and still stays connected with family and friends around the globe.
Her story explores in detail what it meant to survive the deprivation caused by global economic collapse. She shares the lighter side of a continent at war, and the darker side of some of the young men in uniform. They didn’t plan to marry the young girls in her country.
As her life progressed she could document the challenges faced by other girls in other countries. She was convinced that the darker side of man knew no nationality, race, creed, or color. And yet she focused on the better nature of her species. She also came to realize the significance of all the hardship.
